Disgraced former Premier League footballer Adam Johnson is rumoured to have followed murderer Levi Bellfield's lead and converted to Islam while serving his six year sentence for grooming and sexual activity with a minor.

Johnson, 28, is currently at HMP Frankland, known as one of Britain's toughest prisons. Also home to notorious child killer Ian Huntley, who had his throat sliced by an inmate in 2011, Frankland is well known for it's attacks on perverts and paedophiles. It is also home to many Newcastle fans, meaning he is doubly at risk.

Johnson has reportedly been paying for protection in prison currency, which classically involves currecncy ranging from tobacco to Class A drugs such as cocaine, while serving his time, but inmates say he has now become a Muslim in order to receive preferential treatment and try to avoid any brutal assaults upon him. A prison insider said, 'Johnson is regularly abused and called things like nonce and bush dodger, but he's ta king no chances with his physical safety. He now prays four or five times a day and believes his new found religion will result in a cushier time in the big house'.

Others poured scorn on the ex-England winger's claim to have found Allah; recently released prolific burglar, Kenny Ovens claimed, 'he's a filthy makem kiddie fiddler and he'll convert back to being a Christian the second he gets out'.
